The Roosevelt Williams Bridge

Roosevelt Williams was born in a small farming town in Louisiana to Willie and Hazel Williams. After his father was killed in a farming accident, his mother moved the family to Shreveport, Louisiana because she could not maintain the farm with three little children. She worked as a domestic while raising her children. She always stressed the value of service to and for others.

Mr. Williams graduated from Booker T. Washington in 1956 and entered the military where he served three years with the 82nd airborne. Since his mother could not afford college even with the scholarships he had earned, military was a good option.

After military service (1956 - 1959) Mr. Williams moved to Dallas in hopes of finding a better life for a young black  person.  He learned early that he could not go far with only a high school diploma.

After the birth of his fourth child, he has five children along with 16 grandchildren, Mr. Williams; armed with his GI Bill along with a government education program he entered college.

After two year at El Centro College, he received his BS Degree.
